About Our Chapter
Formerly Equality Kansas, the Wichita and Sedgwick County chapter of the Kansas Equality Coalition was founded in April of 2004 to give a voice to the needs, causes, concerns, and rights of the GLBT community. Please join us in our efforts to further the rights of our community in this critical time.

We are fighting discrimination that prevents gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons from enjoying the rights that every free American is entitled to in whatever ways we can find, including:

  • Raising awareness about discrimination in our community
  • Educating voters about key political issues effecting our mission
  • Forming alliances with other organizations to strengthen our cause
  • Providing regular social settings to unite area GLBTs and their allies

Based in Wichita, our efforts are focused in Sedgwick, Harvey, Reno, Butler and Sumner counties.

Wichita News & Events

Are you familiar with Dan Manning? He's running for office and is one of our PAC's endorsed candidates. Not only that, but Dan is a member of our local chapter of KEC and is an "out" candidate. We'd like to dedicate this Fall's election energy to Dan's campaign and if you would like to help, there will be canvassing with Dan Manning each week -- days and times will be variable and posted here when known/given.

However, your first opportunity is this Sunday, August 22nd. You will be meeting at the Sedgwick County Democratic Headquarters at 1064 N. Waco at 1pm. There will be a brief training to get everyone comfortable with walking door to door and canvass will run from 2-5pm in Dan's district. If you are interested then please contact Dan's campaign manager, Sarah, at 990-3446 or sarah@manningforkansas.com.

Dear fellow Equality Coalition members:

In the aftermath of last week’s death threat, I have received countless messages of encouragement and support. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

There are many reasons I'm running for House of Representatives, and none of them have to do with personal gain or glory. The LGBT community in this state needs someone that can speak as one of us. Having straight allies is wonderful and necessary, but until we actually have someone from the LGBT community representing us in Topeka, our voice will never truly be heard

Dear friends,

As many of you know, one of our Equality Coalition members, Dan Manning, is running for Kansas House of Representatives in Wichita. Originally from southern Georgia, Dan is a West Point graduate who served for 8 years in the US Army before being discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Dan has since made Kansas his home and directed his passion for serving our nation in to a campaign to serve in the state Legislature.

Dan’s opponent is long-time incumbent Brenda Landwehr. Landwehr, a notorious far-right conservative, has been a vocal opponent of equal rights for gay, lesbian and transgendered Kansans. Since February, she has used Dan’s sexual orientation to stir up her constituent. She has gone so far as to use language that Dan was told was “too offensive” to repeat.
