***CRITICAL ACTION ALERT*** [ Posted Sunday Feb 12 2012, 7:35 am by Thomas Witt ]When: February 12th, 2012-February 15th, 2012 Where: () A bill that will wipe out all local non-discrimination laws and policies at the local level is having a hearing in the Kansas Legislature Tuesday, February 14. HB 2260 WILL LEGALIZE DISCRIMINATION against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender residents by nullifying local anti-discrimination laws and policies. All university non-discrimination policies, all school district policies, all local laws at the city and county level will be wiped out if this passes. WE MUST STOP THIS BILL. With your action, we stopped it last year. This bill would allow anyone to claim religious exemption to local ordinances and policies, and gives them the right to sue every Kansas city, county, school district or college that has LGBT protections on its books. University of Kansas, K-State, Pitt State, Wichita State, and every community college with LGBT protections will lose the ability to enforce their policies. Every school district that has adopted policies protecting LGBT students will see themselves opened to lawsuits, just by having those policies on their books. Every Kansas city that has passed these protections as local law are targeted. KEC’s efforts to pass non-discrimination laws in other cities will be halted. Prior to moving forward, House Bill No. 2260 must be approved by the House Judiciary Committee. THEY MUST HEAR FROM YOU. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP: - Call and email the members of the Judiciary Committee, and tell them you are opposed to HB2260. - Pass this action alert on to your friends and family, and ask them to call - Share this action alert on Facebook, Twitter, and your other social networks. Do not be shy about calling home numbers. That’s why they’re listed – so these legislators can hear from you. Just don’t call too early in the morning or too late in the evening. *BE POLITE* We need to win their votes. Ask them to oppose HB2260, but do not get argumentative or engage in name calling.
